Week 6 opened early. Troy beat Southern Miss 55–34 on Tuesday. Wednesday had Jacksonville State edging Kennesaw State 27–26 on a Garrison Rippa field goal with 51 seconds left, and FIU beating New Mexico State 22–3 behind five Robert Czeremcha field goals. Thursday brought Liberty 35–3 over Sam Houston, WKU 34–13 over Missouri State, UTSA 31–24 over USF, and South Alabama 56–49 at Arkansas State, the highest-scoring FBS game of the season according to ESPN.
HX picked six of the seven winners. The miss was Arkansas State (HX −7.5), which Vegas also favored at −1.5. UTSA landed exactly on HX’s −7.0, which matched the book’s number too.
Off the field, the carousel hasn’t started. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports no FBS firings so far this season. By this point last year there were five power-conference openings. Turnover hit a record 33 jobs in the last cycle, and ADs are weighing big buyouts against rising roster costs. Separately, Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti said the league has had “absolutely no discussions” about expansion, even though the proposed Protect College Sports Act would allow up to 20 members.
Why it matters
The midweek results are already final on the site, and the carousel’s silence is the backdrop for a Saturday that could start it.
